Djibouti is the largest and the capital city of Djibouti. It is located on the Gulf of Tadjoura in the coastal Djibouti region in the Horn of Africa. The city is geographically located 21 kilometers from the Somaliland border to the north. It is a seaport that is the only sheltered harbor on the Gulf of Tajdoura in the western region. It is mostly subjected to earthquakes due to the Red Sea Rift and the Somali plate that has led to numerous faults and landscape that is either semi-desert or desert along the coastal lowlands. It has 31 districts which include; Gabode, Heron, and Haramous among many others. Due to its diversity of habitats, Djibouti has different plant species inclusive of semi-arid lands, beaches, and mangroves with the most preferred plants being; Acacia tortillas, Urochondra, Panicum turgidum, and African foxtail grass. The sandy beaches along the city include Heron Beach and Siesta Beach. . The city has an elevation of 14 meters. The city is characterized by hot summers that are rainless and warm with slight wet winter seasons. The two seasons occur in phases where the hot dry seasons are between May to October and the winter season is between November to April. The average temperature range is between 29 and 42 degrees Celsius though precipitation is highly variable due to long periods without rainfall as a result of greater cloud coverage and fog.
In June 1977, Djibouti declared its independence with an approximate population of 110,000 where the city later served as the commercial capital and administrative of the republic of Djibouti. It has a population of about 600,000 of its inhabitants which is approximately one-third of the country’s population. It is also a multi-ethnic town with the largest ethnic group being the Afars and the Somali which are both Cushitic-speaking people. The population is also predominantly made up of Muslims. There are two official languages spoken by the residents which include French and Arabic whereby Arabic is of great social, religious, and cultural importance in the city. The highest population of the city is the Muslims whereas the remaining population is made up of the remaining Christian residents. Some of the worship places include the mosques that are mainly located and also Christian churches and temples such as the protestant churches, evangelical churches, and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Djibouti.
The city is a home of different architectural sites that shows the preserved history of the city. Also, it serves as the center of a residential area, entertainment, and commerce. For the accommodation of the growing middle-class developments in housing has been established. Djibouti has also been likened by the European due to its structures and numerous exotic edifices. It has three communes that include; commune of Boulos, the commune of Ras-Dika, and the town of Balboa as well as serving as the hub for various organizations internationally, state agencies, and continental organizations. Also, it serves as the home of the Armoured Regiment of Djibouti. The city also has law enforcement jurisdiction founded in 1977 by the Djibouti National Police.


Djibouti has attraction sites such as; The National Archives and National Library of Djibouti which is the main museum of the city, Lagarde Park (largest park), Lac’Assal, Moucha Island, Day Forest National park, and Khor Ambado Beach among many. The economy of the city is mainly concentrated on the private sector since the economic activities mostly revolve around the strategic location and the country’s free trade and most headquarters of the business are located within the city. It also has the largest telecommunication company known as Djibouti Telecom. The chief economic activity in the city is cargo operations as well as the banking sector which is one of the city economy foundations. The city currency is the Djibouti Franc (DJF) where one US dollar is equivalent to 177.721 francs. It is the home of religious schools, many elementary and high schools, and other learning institutions. The city is twinned with three countries namely; Ankara, Turkey, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Saint Paul Minnesota, United States. Football is a popular sporting activity in the city. The city has got notable persons which include; former prime minister of the city (Dileita Mohammed Dileita), political and women’s equality activist(Choukri Djibah), and politician(Yacin Elmi Bouh).
